Whitby cottages questions and answers for tourists page

One of the most common questions we are asked about is the parking facilities in the town, which all changed in 2014 when the park-and-ride scheme was introduced. It has improved the centre of Whitby itself which has limited parking places, by encouraging people to leave their vehicles on the outskirts in the designated car park and then ride into the town centre by bus. And for the people who are actually staying in Whitby for short breaks, it’s improved the situation for them also becouse Whitby Holiday Cottages property letting company issue all our guests complimentary free parking Scratch cards which allow them to park on the on road designated parking zones in town.

If you would like more information about the park-and-ride, it is located at the A171/B1460 junction North of Whitby and has 450 free spaces. For people using a sat nav to find the site, follow postcode YO21 1TL.  The buses run every 15 minutes, stopping at West Cliff North Terrace, St. Hilda's Terrace and the bus station before returning to the park and ride site via the same stops. Guests to the town can park on the road just a little further out from the center of Whitby itself and also in the pay-and-display car parks near the center of town. Whitby Pay and Display Car Parks and other on road spots you can park free

Whitby has many events which occur during the year, like the Whitby Folk Festival. Other major events of the year are Whitby Regatta, Whitby Goth weekend which occurs twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn and many other attractions like the 1940s weekend which focuses on the war years. The main two attractions regarding Whitby's historic buildings are Whitby Abbey and St Mary's Church, both of which dominate the skyline on the East side cliffs looking over the River Esk. The town has very strong connections with the Gothic community, which has been encouraged to a large degree by Bram Stoker who stayed in Whitby and was influenced by the town itself whilst writing his classic book Dracula.

In the video below takes you on a walking journey around the Whitby. The film starts at Goathland village which became extremely popular being the centre of filming for the TV series Heartbeat, with the village itself representing on-screen the fictitious village of Aidensfield. On leaving this village it is only a very short picturesque 9 mile drive to the centre of Whitby over the North York Moors.

 In Whitby the walking tour starts on the West Cliff with the view over towards Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff and wind down the Khyber Pass into the center of Whitby Harbour. It takes a short boat ride out to sea, providing you with the lovely sight of Whitby Harbour as you enter through its twin piers.The video tour then goes up the cobbled streets of Church Street and ascending the 199 steps to look at St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey.

Tourists also ask about Whitby jet and can find several shops selling jet jewellery in the town itself with a dedicated museum at the top of Church Street showing a complete Victorian Jet Works which was founded in the attic of one of the fishermen's houses in town well over 100 years ago.

Whitby as two very interesting museums the first one being the captain Cook Museum, which is housed in the actual l7th century  building on Grape Lane just off  Whitby's harbour side, where the young James Cook was an apprentice. The second Whitby Museum is set in the beautiful surroundings of Pannett Park. This Art Gallery was the idea Alderman Pannett who very kindly gifted the land and finances for its construction. http://pannettartgallery.org/ Originally the Alderman wanted the art gallery to house and preserve his many watercolours and drawings of the area.
