This old Whitby Cottage is named after Caedmon the earliest poet who cared for the animals at the monastery of Streonæshalchn (Whitby Abbey) during (657–680). He was originally ignorantSir Hugh Cholmley in 1638 Sir Hugh Cholmley in 1638of "the art of song" but learned to compose one night in the course of a dream, according to the 8th-century historian Bede. He later became a zealous monk and an accomplished and inspirational Christian poet.

On 27 August 1927 this cottage was for sale and on this l document you can see the 1000 year lease on the property which was initially set up by the Cholmley family who took ownership of Whitby Abbey and its land after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 living in the lodgings behind the Abbey until they built the Banqueting House costing the small fortune at the time of £232,000. Their wealth came from the local alum industry and Sir Hugh Cholmley's involvement in building a fortified harbour wall in the English colony of Tangiers. Whitby Abbey attracts huge crowds along with its visitor center, which is built in the shell of the 17th Century house nestling behind Whitbys medieval Abbey. On 30 March 2000 the center was officially opened, marking the end of the Whitby Abbey's Headland project to give public access to natural beauty and history and architectural past of this beautiful North Yorkshire coast.
