Along Baxtergate on the west side of Whitby it is now prominently a busy shopping area with the yards occupying many Whitby holiday cottages.
But originally going back to 1400 it was named after a family called Baxter with them owing property around this area and probably one of the prettiest old yards is Linskill Square which once again now occupies many holiday cottages which face each other with a cobbled yard area.

The Chapel of St Ninian
In this part of Whitby some of the buildings represent a style of older Whitby, and in this spot you find Old Ship Lunch Inn, which is a very old, a very old building which is rumoured to have had a secret passageway which took you down to the harbour front. There is a figure on the front "Ye old smugglers “which is very likely to be a relic of some old wreck. To the side there is a little passageway which has one of the was memorable names of any of the yards in Whitby, it is called Loggerhead yard and many people like to have their photograph taken at the front of this unusual name.
The other most popular yard is probably Arguments yard which is actually on Church Street on the east side, but once again a favourite with the tourists because of its humorous association. Loggerhead yard was originally was originally called Doctor Lane and the inn is rumoured to have been a favourite place for the smuggling fraternity.
Baxter gate originally was completely residential until around 1700 and it is actually built upon a sandbank with old mooring post been discovered in the past during excavation.
In the first part of the 19th century there was an iron foundry and an old Quay which belongs to Mr George Chapman who was buried in an iron cast tombstone in the old churchyard. Also at this time you could find a clay pipe maker here by the name of Richard Hilton.
The only building which was public was the brick built chapel of St Ninian which was opened in 1788 which was constructed by shipwrights who built Captain Cooks ships. Being located in such a popular holiday location light Whitby, St Ninian's is reported to welcomes several thousand visitors a year through the doors.
Baxter gate is very popular nowadays because it is accessed on the flat from the Whitby swing bridge and is a very busy prominently shopping area which runs parallel to the harbour and gives access to the main tourist information centre and various cafes and eateries. It is also very popular with the tourists with many Whitby holiday cottages residing at the little yards giving easy access to the town centre without having to climb the steep hills.
