Great news that Whitby won a national award from Britain in Bloom, beating all the other competitors and been awarded a gold medal from the Royal horticultural Society. Great news that Whitby won a national award from Britain in Bloom, beating all the other competitors and been awarded a gold medal from the Royal horticultural Society.


A ceremony was conducted at St Andrews in Scotland and it was decided that Whitby in Bloom which had been working alongside various volunteer groups, greatly impressed a team at 12 horticultural Society judges, were touring the UK and visiting the 76 UK finalists, which had been narrowed down from over 1000 participating communities.


The judges said this beautiful Yorkshire coastal resort shone through in the small coastal category. Many delights were visited, with Pannett Park being a fitting end to the excellent community entry, where the judges met, what appeared to be at least half the town.


Coun David Jeffels Scarborough Councils portfolio holder for tourism and culture said “Whitby in Bloom group has earned their honours by putting a tremendous amount of volunteer hours over the last year. This is not a quick fix for one day when the judges visited, but the results of the year long program of activities covering floral and environmental projects. Most importantly all of the community as work together to achieve this fantastic accolade which is richly deserved”

Due to the success of the old town there has been many press articles regarding both these awards which will help to improve its tourism, which is the main industry in Whitby nowadays.
The town as many attractions like Whitby Abbey at the top of its famous199 steps, and is famous for its association with Bram Stoker who was inspired to write his famous book Dracula while staying in the town.
